  • We show pride in our school and expect our staff and students to commit to these value statements.

Building Condition:

Harbor Ridge Middle School sits on a site at the ridge of the harbor in the lovely community of Gig Harbor. The school was built in 1921 as Union High School but through the years of multiple add-ons and remodeling the school eventually became a middle school. The land on which the school was built was donated by the Lucy Goodman family to be used for a school. In the early 1990’s the community recognized that the old but beautiful building and its coveted site were in great need of modernization. Demolition and construction of part of the campus was completed in 2004. In August of 2006, phase 2 of the multi-year construction project was completed for a total rebuilding of the school. The facility now includes 14 classrooms, 4 science labs, a state of the art computer lab, art and wood shop areas, home arts lab, band, choir and drama classrooms, a performing arts stage and multi purpose gym. A student Commons and food services kitchen provide the students with an open seating area for lunch and other activities.  A beautiful library with a view of Mr. Rainier and Gig Harbor makes this school one where “the view is so good you can see the future.” The outside facility has been updated to include an artificial turf field and increased staff and community parking.

Community Use:
With its location in a populated and easily accessible area, Harbor Ridge fields and gym are in great demand by the community. Youth groups and community organizations enjoy the commons/stage area for concerts, forums and other large group assemblies. For community use information, please call the school at 530-1900.

Test Results:

Public schools in Washington State are required to give two types of tests to students every year.

A criterion referenced test, Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) - is given to students in grades 4 (Reading, Writing and Math), grade 5 (Science), grade 7 (Reading, Writing and Math), grade 8 (Science), and grade 10 (Reading, Writing, Math and Science). The results of this test indicate the performance of a school based on a set of academic standards. In Washington these standards are called Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) and they are explained in more detail at the state's Public Instruction website. An example of interpreting these results, a 7th grade score of 60 in Reading means that 60% of 7th grade students in the school met the state's academic standard in Reading.

The Reading and Math results of the WASL are also used as a yardstick to determine whether schools are meeting the goals set by the "No Child Left Behind" federal legislation. Every year from 2002 to 2014 the percent of students who meet state standards are expected to increase until, in 2014, all students meet the Reading and Math standard. If a school/district has met this yearly goal then they are considered to have met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).

Click here for a  copy of a letter we received from Terry Bergeson and Christine Gregoire. We are very proud of the efforts of the Harbor Ridge learning community and our students.

Test and AYP results can be found on the state's Report Card web site; http://reportcard.ospi.k12.wa.us/
